Save Your Sand! Why SandMatâ„¢ and SandMat Maxâ„¢ Are Essential for Lakefront Living

Creating a sandy beach on your lakefront is a dream for many property owners. But without proper preparation, that dream can quickly wash away—literally. Sand tends to mix with the underlying soil, erode over time, and become a magnet for weed growth.

That’s where SandMat™ and SandMat Max™ come in—two simple yet powerful tools designed to protect your sand investment and help you build a beautiful, long-lasting beach.

The Problem: Sand Erosion and Weeds

Spreading sand directly on the shoreline or over soft lake bottom leads to several challenges:

  • Sand Displacement: Over time, your sand seeps into the muck or washes away in waves.
  • Weed Growth: Without a weed barrier, invasive aquatic plants can easily take over.
  • Poor Drainage: On spongy shores, sand can turn into a soggy mess without the right foundation.

These issues make beach upkeep frustrating—and expensive.

The Solution: SandMatâ„¢ & SandMat Maxâ„¢

SandMatâ„¢ is a durable geotextile fabric that sits between your sand and soil, forming a long-lasting, weed-resistant base. It:

  • Prevents sand from mixing with the soil below
  • Inhibits weed growth by blocking sunlight
  • Help hold sand in place
  • Is chemical-free and safe for land and aquatic life

SandMat Max™ (formerly Super SandMat) takes things a step further. It includes an internal geogrid layer that adds even more support for soft or spongy shorelines. It’s like giving your beach a giant snowshoe—it spreads out the weight and creates a firmer, drier base for your sand or topsoil.

Installation: Simple & Fast

You don’t need heavy machinery or contractors. Installing SandMat™ or SandMat Max™ is a DIY-friendly process:

  • Clear the shoreline and level the ground.
  • Unroll the mat on dry land or moist soil.
  • Overlap multiple mats by 1 foot if needed.
  • Spread 3 to 8 inches of clean sand on top.
  • Enjoy a firm, weed-free, gorgeous beach.

Note: These mats are intended for onshore use. If you want to extend your beach into the water, check out MuckMat Proâ„¢, which uses a rigid aluminized frame to stay in place underwater.

Why It Works Better Than Tarps

Some lake homeowners attempt to use plastic tarps or landscaping fabric to save sand. Don't. These materials are not designed for underwater use, break down quickly, and can even harm wildlife.

SandMat™ is made from highway-grade geotextile fabric—the same material used in civil engineering projects. It’s tough, long-lasting (up to 40 years), and designed for the lakefront environment.

Both SandMatâ„¢ and SandMat Maxâ„¢ are:

🌎 Earth-friendly – No chemicals, safe for fish, frogs, and turtles

🇺🇸 Made in the USA – Materials sourced and assembled in Georgia, Michigan, and North Carolina

💪 Built to Last – Minimum projected lifespan of 40 years

Still Not Sure Which Mat to Use?

Use SandMatâ„¢ if your shoreline is moderately firm and you want a weed-free beach.

Use SandMat Maxâ„¢ if your shoreline is soft, wet, or spongy and needs more stability.
